For well over a century, growers from all over the World
have bought their flowers to Holland to sell on. From these
humble beginnings, Aalsmeer has become the centre of the World
flower trade. As the business of flower exporting grew, so
the methods of transporting have changed too!
In the 1960’s a few ambitious dutch traders converted
small vans and trucks so that they had shutters along each
side – opening so that they could show the flowers on
trolleys stacked inside – and took their flowers to
neighbouring European countries. These traders became known
as the ‘Flying Dutchmen’. Although a few of these
older style of vehicles are still in service today, they are
no longer so popular due to the discomfort suffered by both
the customer and the salesman in particularly bad weather!

| Mercurius Flowers were one of the first ‘Flying
Dutchman’ wholesalers to transport their flowers in
fully enclosed vans and trucks, utilising both heating and
cooling units in order to keep the flowers at a constant,
optimum temperature. These trucks allowed us to offer our
products comfortably and offer the ‘Mercurius Difference,’
transporting many flowers in water so that they arrive in
perfect condition and ready to use too!
The latest fleet of vehicles include brand new, custom designed
‘step frame’ trailers that enable us to carry
a huge range of standard, specialised and exotic flowers,
enabling you – the customer, to view them in a comfortable
‘shop like’ environment.
